Looking
at Mary Carter's tiny paintings is stepping through a miniature door
into a different world. It is a calm, untroubled place of
soft luminous light where time has stopped for a fraction of a second
and a tranquil moment has been captured forever. The world of
Mary's paintings seems enigmatic, set as it is in an imaginary
time of peace and hope, where figures pose gracefully in soft glowing
evening light, the light often streaming from a window through which we
have a glimpse of yet another magical world beyond. Her subjects
are mostly children, and she captures them in their innocence, and
without judgement. The diminutive paintings have the luminosity
of old-fashioned colour transparencies; it is as though there is a
strong light source behind the pictures making the subtle colours and
textures glow with life.
These images, executed with
exquisitely fine brushstrokes are extremely small, but they contain
within them an amazing power, and the softness of the colours, the
detailed texture of the fabrics, the delicate features of the subjects,
are painted with such skill and perfection of style to make her work on
this miniature scale so instantly appealing.
